Man in ‘serious condition’ after shooting at South Shore Plaza in Braintree, no suspects in custody – Boston 25 News

BRAINTREE, Mass. – The South Shore Plaza in Braintree closed Saturday afternoon after a man was shot inside the mall near the Forever 21 store. The victim, a 26-year-old man, was transported in a Boston hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to District Attorney Morrissey.

Police are asking people to avoid the area for the rest of the evening. According to officers, the mall was emptied fairly quickly.

At around 3 p.m., police said there was “an encounter at one of the stores.” It was between two men, and one pulled out a gun and shot the other.

The mall was immediately locked down after the shooting. Braintree Police issued a warning to avoid the area around 3.30pm. Shortly after, police said the mall was closed.

Braintree Police Deputy Chief Tim Cohoon said they believe the suspect left the mall immediately.

A person who was at the mall this afternoon told Boston 25 News that they were inside when they heard the fire alarms go off.

“Store staff lowered the doors and guided all customers to the back and eventually out of the mall. Once outside I saw cops everywhere,” a Boston 25 source said.

Police say it appears to be a targeted incident and more information will be released soon. The search for this suspect is still ongoing.

Anyone with information about the incident should call Braintree Police Detectives at 781-794-8620, contact Mass State Police Detectives, or email [email protected]

Saturday’s shooting is not the first at South Shore Plaza.

In July 2020, a man fired a gun six times inside the mall, hitting a 15-year-old girl. The victim survived the shooting and the shooter, 21-year-old Jose Rodriguez of Boston, pleaded guilty to all charges against him. The judge sentenced him to eight years in prison.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
