That’s according to a recent Dark Reading survey of 215 IT and cybersecurity professionals, who identified the types of incidents posing the greatest threat to sensitive organizational data.

Dark Reading’s “The State of Incident Response 2021” Report Shows Security Professionals Most Concerned About Breaches of Intellectual Property and Trade Secrets (36%), Followed by Unauthorized Use of Applications by accredited users (17%). In addition, 16% said that failures of IT systems, applications or internal networks pose significant organizational risks.

Trending in the right direction, respondents still see ransomware and malware infections and a customer and employee information data breach as significant threats to the organization, but not as much as the year before. In 2021, 48% of respondents cited ransomware and malware as potential threats, up from 58% in 2020, while 44% in 2021 cited loss of customer and employee data, up from 59% in 2020. The decline appears to be associated with greater confidence in the organization’s ability to detect a potential compromise as soon as it occurs or within minutes / hours of it.
