Mental health advocates are calling on city council to increase federal relief dollars they say are currently allocated to mental health.

The pandemic has exacerbated mental health problems, Christine Somervill, a member of the city’s mental health task force, said at a council meeting on November 1. “Mental health services are [in] extremely high demand right now, ”she said.

The members of the working group pushed to have more ARPA money dedicated to mental health services. Applications for restorative housing subsidies poured in last week in anticipation of the Nov. 5 deadline, Deputy City Manager Kimberly Richardson said. These grants represent the first program of the City of Evanston’s so-called repair pledge.

As of Nov. 2, there were 398 claimants, and as of Nov. 3, there were 476, Richardson told city council’s reparations committee on Thursday, Nov.5. It anticipates more than 500 applications for grants for restorative housing.
